Black Democrats question Sanders’ commitment to Obama
Ms Clinton, 68, who has struggled to regain momentum after losing badly to Mr Sanders in the New Hampshire primary on Tuesday, sought to cast herself as a more sensible, pragmatic progressive.
Sen. Sanders addressed her criticisms by saying his plan would not dismantle the Affordable Care Act, Medicaid, or the Children’s Health Insurance Program.
“We should be deporting criminals, not hardworking immigrant families who do the very best they can”, Clinton said.
– Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign enlisted the support of black Democrats on Friday to undermine Bernie Sanders’ push to claim a piece of President Barack Obama’s legacy, arguing she is the rightful heir to the nation’s first black president.
Both candidates promised large-scale criminal justice reform and comprehensive immigration reform, including a pathway to citizenship for the 11 million undocumented immigrants now living and working in the United States. It’s the first poll conducted in the state this year. Sanders touted his solution of education rather than incarceration, with his proposal for free public college education.
On the Republican side…the attacks were aimed at one man…Donald Trump.
I rearranged the order of the comments in last night’s debate to highlight the fact that this is not just the same argument, but that Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders are saying the same things. “I do not expect from someone running for the Democratic nomination to succeed President Obama”, Ms Clinton charged during the Democratic presidential debate. “A person with integrity and authenticity would run as what they are”, Reed said of Sanders, who served as an independent in Congress for more than two decades. “She talked about getting the approval or the support or the mentoring of Henry Kissinger”, Sanders said. “I am not a single-issue candidate, and I do not believe we live in a single-issue country”. He mentioned the overthrow of Mossadeq in the 1950s and criticizsed Clinton’s relationship with Henry Kissinger, who was privy to more than questionable activities in Cambodia.
“I think that that points out sort of a difference in their approach”, says Keith. And she and I looked at the same evidence coming from the Bush administration regarding Iraq. You’ve got a bit of experience, I would imagine. For his part, Sanders is struggling to make a convincing case that the numbers add up in his hugely expensive health plan.
SANDERS: “A male, African-American baby born today stands a one-in-four chance of ending up in jail”.
“Why in God’s name does Wall Street make huge campaign contributions?” he asked rhetorically.
“The current campaign finance system is corrupt and undermines American democracy”, according to him. His campaign contends that his message will be well-received by minority voters, arguing that blacks and Hispanics have been hurt even more by what he calls a “rigged” economy.
Debate moderators Gwen Ifill and Judy Woodruff knew the score too.
During his New Hampshire victory speech Sanders appealed to supporters to contribute what they could.
