Gov. Chris Christie to suspend presidential bid, report says
Both Carly Fiorina and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie suspended their campaigns Wednesday.
Christie, 53, said in a Facebook post he was leaving the race “without an ounce of regret”, a day after the combative Republican’s sixth-place finish in the New Hampshire primary raised doubts about his viability as a candidate. While New Hampshire makes it easy for independents to vote in party primaries, other states allow only party members to participate.
But Cruz, for his 11.7 percent of the vote share, only spent about $18 per vote.
US Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, a democratic socialist, defeated former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in the state’s Democratic contest.
Should Mr Trump win in SC, it could grow exceedingly hard for his rivals to slow his momentum as the race moves into conservative states across the south in the next few weeks.
Christie had poured much of his campaign’s resources into New Hampshire and had considered a good showing there critical. After finishing second in the Iowa caucus last week, Trump won the nation’s first primary with an estimated $38 per vote – and potentially put to rest concerns that his strong poll numbers and celebrity wouldn’t translate into turnout.
“Christie needed to drop out”.
If one of the center-right candidates emerges after upcoming voting in Nevada and SC, that candidate will receive a huge boost going into Super Tuesday and there will be a coalescence of GOP leaders and big donors around that candidate ahead of Super Tuesday.
“Christie was certainly hurt by Trump stealing his ‘telling it like it is thunder, ‘ but Christie was also out-organized in the ultimate retail politics state”, Murray said. Exit polls from Iowa and New Hampshire show Trump competed well with Cruz among voters who call themselves born-again Christians.
Trump is now at 9/2, compared with 7/1 last week, meaning his chances of victory in November are now 18%. “I’m so proud of the campaign we ran, the people that ran it with me and all those who gave us their support and confidence along the way”, he said. The South Carolina GOP primary is February 20.
Sharpton and Obama met at the same restaurant during Obama’s successful 2008 presidential campaign – a piece of symbolism for Sanders as he tries to expand his appeal beyond liberals in the US Northeast.
While Christie first laughed off the suggestion that his team had anything to do with the plot, the denials quickly unraveled following the release of emails, including one from a top aide that read, “Time for some traffic problems in Fort Lee”. We must be front and centre and not marginalised. We’re going to be the nominee.
Martin pointed to major gains in Christie’s favorability over the course of the campaign, which he described as “a testament to his skills and ability as a communicator and a candidate”.
That’s according to Rubio’s campaign manager, Terry Sullivan, who told The Associated Press that this week’s disappointing performance in New Hampshire will extend the Republican nomination fight for another three months, if not longer.
Clinton has a long history of support for civil rights.
And they agreed on the importance of those issues in this election, with Clinton arguing that there is a “whole national effort to try to set back women’s rights” while Sanders said that “women’s rights are under fierce attack all over this country”.
