Microsoft Corporation acquires Groove Music App
Microsoft has yet to formally announce its acquisition of Groove.
“Microsoft acquired everything from Groove, ” said Zikera CEO, Tri Nguyen. Microsoft is working towards increasing the market share of Windows Phone devices, and this move will enable the company to improve the input methods on Windows Phone devices. However, while the company now has the SwiftKey employees working for them, nothing like that is in the case of Zikera, as only the technology behind Groove and the Groove Music for iOS brand name have been taken over by the company. We are incredibly proud to have delighted you with a rich mobile experience and countless hours of music bliss through the tens of millions of personalised playlists we generated.
The announcement came via a Medium post, in which the Groove Music team talked about the company’s founding in 2009. The renewed music service was named Groove, a catchy title that adds to the vibration it gets across.
At the time of the rebranding, a number of us noted there already was a Windows Phone/Windows 8 music app in the Windows Store called “Groove Smart Music Player”.
As it turns out, Microsoft Groove and that separate Groove app were two different things.
“In light of this acquisition, Groove is no longer available for download, but current users may continue to use the app. Please note, however, that we are not submitting any more updates”. According to the developers, the app uses machine learning to achieve the personalized playlists.
Before this application was removed after the deal, it has been downloaded by more than 1.5 million people from the Apple App Store. There is a possibility that it is a threat of litigation that has headed the Redmond giant to buy the application. The company also said that it had chose to acquire the domain name that is associated with the Groove applications.
