Zika Virus May Not Spread Through Saliva, Urine: Health Officials
In newly issued guidelines about sexual transmission of the disease. official said men who have traveled to Zika-infected countries should use condoms or abstain from sex for the duration of their partner’s pregnancy.
A Rockland woman who recently traveled to South America has been diagnosed with the Zika virus, officials said Friday.
As for men and their nonpregnant sex partners, the CDC says they “might consider abstaining from sexual activity or using condoms consistently and correctly during sex”.
Three cases of the Zika virus have been reported in D.C., all from people who traveled outside of the United States, the city’s health department said.
“The science is not clear on how long the risk should be avoided”, CDC officials said in a statement. But there are things that people can do to lower their risk of contracting the virus, including rigorously protecting against mosquito bites, which are the usual mode of Zika transmission, and following the new guidelines to prevent sexual transmission, Frieden said.
Pregnant women are already being advised against unnecessary travel to areas affected by Zika. One case was spread from a man to a woman, before the man showed any symptoms.
No cases of Zika virus have been reported in Pennsylvania.
