Chaos and politics at JNU no innocent will be harassed: Rajnath
Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh today said that the programme at Jawaharlal Nehru University where “anti-national” slogans were allegedly raised during an event for parliament attack convict Afzal Guru, had the full backing of LeT chief Hafiz Saeed.
“I want to make it clear that the JNU incident has the support of Lashkar chief Hafiz Saeed. This is unfortunate”, Singh said.
As Singh said the truth that the JNU agitation received support from Saeed, who is chief of Pakistan-based LeT, needed to be understood by the nation, National Conference leader Omar Abdullah said it is a “very serious charge” to level against the students and that the evidence must be shared with all. Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Premnath said in a letter to the top brass that the link between the students and parliament attacks convict Afzal Guru, whose hanging students were protesting, needs to be looked into.
CPI-M General Secretary Sitaram Yechury said the Home Minister has to come out and share the evidence he has with the country to back up his “serious allegation”. “But they are not doing that, instead (they are) targeting the Left organization”, said CPI leader D Raja. Nation must also accept the reality that incident that took place in JNU, has been supported by Hafiz Saeed.
Police are investigating as to whether the twitter handle actually belonged to the LeT founder. India considers him one of its most wanted terrorists because of his alleged ties with Lashkar-e-Taiba and his involvement in attacks against India including the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks.
The home minister told CPI(M), CPI and JD (U) members who met him yesterday seeking the release of JNU Students Union president Kanhaiya Kumar that the court would decide whether further action should be taken against the arrested students. Meanwhile, the university’s teachers have appealed to the public not to “brand” the university as “anti-national”. “This kind of police action on students on pretext of national security is uncalled for”, Narain said.
