Burger King Adding Grilled Hot Dogs to Permanent Menu
The classic grilled dog and the chili cheese dog will launch at Burger King locations across the U.S. on February 23.
With the introduction of Grilled Dogs as a permanent menu item, Burger King will serve hot dogs in more restaurants than any other restaurant chain in the United States, according to the release.
Macedo says Burger King becomes the biggest seller-in terms of number of restaurants-of hot dogs in America.
Perhaps the most spectacular fast-food menu flop was the McDonald’s Arch Deluxe.
Ronnie Vaughan (@Vaughanr16) agreed, tweeting “As a big hot dog guy, @BurgerKing adding them to the menu is an A+ move”. The dogs will be $1.99 for the Classic build and $2.29 for the Chili Cheese.
Macedo recalled another Burger King failure from the past.
Burger King started experimenting with hot dogs in five cities previous year, and chose to go nationwide after those sales exceeded targets, said Macedo, who declined to provide additional details.
The U.S. Hot Dog and Sausage Council estimates Americans eat 20 billion hot dogs a year, compared to 50 billion burgers a year.
“We made a bunch of mistakes and we learned a lot”, Macedo said.
While the trend could be interpreted as a lack of customers clamoring for hot dogs, Solochek says it could also mean Burger King has the opportunity to take over a category that doesn’t face a ton of competition.
The meat company, formerly a part of Kraft Foods, joined the broader 3G family a year ago, when Kraft and Heinz merged in a deal backed by Warren Buffett.
Grilled Dogs are available in both the Classic Grilled Dog and the Chili Cheese Grilled Dog.
“Team members have been watching training videos in which Snoop Dogg gives the lesson”, The Times notes.
