Those Valentine’s Day flowers might just be from Kenya
“It tends to be this way when Valentine’s Day is on a Sunday”, Schumacker said.
Flowers are a nice way to let someone know you care, but a flower shop owner in town said they’re seeing a trend with the holiday landing on a weekend.
A budding group of American flower-delivery start-ups filling orders for Valentine’s Day this week were shunning the most popular way to say “I love you”: red roses. “You see so many flower sellers, standing by traffic signals and selling flowers from the footpaths”, she said.
The drop in Russian demand isn’t translating into a drop in the price of a bouquet this Valentine’s Day, said Neville Ratemo, a director at Kenya’s Horticultural Council. They only last for like a day or two but I think I’m going to get in trouble if I don’t get Roses.
According to Lebanese Farmers Association, the local production of flowers is estimated at $15 million per year. Saigal, for instance, stated that the flower business is flourishing in general and roses have more of a seasonal market.
The orders start pouring in a week ahead of time, as people try to get flowers delivered before the weekend.
With all of that said, it would be a good idea to call your favorite florist now, today and get the job done.
“They all come dry packed like this”, Anderson said as he held on to a cardboard box.
Diane Schumacker, who owns Parkside Flowers & Gifts in Roseburg with her husband, Troy, agreed that most Valentine’s flowers are delivered to people at work.
But even flowers can go through trendy phases, and while roses may be classic, for some customers they’re no longer cool. “They’ve gone a little bit away from the roundy moundy bouquets”. Further research found that apart from the roses, other flower varieties are sold at regular prices but people usually buy them at any price, for they know wholesale costs increase a month in advance. The store is wrapping all arrangements in plastic from the time it leaves the shop so the flowers don’t die. “To me, it’s a really pretty and meaningful gift”, she said.
“Stein Your Florist” company in Mayfair was busy taking deliveries of long-stem roses Friday morning.
Seed Kitchen & Bar will feature Chef Doug Turbush’s Valentine’s Day menu, available for $75 per person.
“We’ve been basically preparing to make massive amounts of truffles and specialty sweets and things like that since right after Christmas”, Newell said.
