DiCaprio favored for best-actor prize at Britain’s BAFTAs
The BAFTA Awards 2016 nominees party was a success.
Leonardo DiCaprio took the leading actor Bafta for his performance in The Revenant, which also scooped the overall award for best film and the best director award for for Alejandro G Inarritu.
Ronan, who is nominated in the Best Actress category for her film Brooklyn – which sees her character move from Ireland to NY – said: “It was really unusual that there was no separation in her journey compared to mine”.
Best Film: Carol, The Revenant, Spotlight, Bridge of Spies, The Big Short.
Mark Rylance’s Best Supporting Actor Bafta for his work in Bridge of Spies could be seen coming so far off, there might as well have been a blue flashing light and a siren on top of the statuette.
Star Wars actor John Boyega is among the nominees, and other stars nominated include Fifty Shades Of Grey’s Dakota Johnson, Welsh actor Taron Egerton, Brie Larson and Hammersmith-born Bel Powley, who starred in coming-of-age drama The Diary Of A Teenage Girl in 2015.
DiCaprio plays the lead role in the film about a fur trapper fighting for his life.
Inside the plush auditorium, actor-comedian Stephen Fry hosted a ceremony that included a Valentine’s-themed kiss-cam stunt which saw seatmates including DiCaprio and Maggie Smith smooch onscreen.
Carol lost out in the Production Design, Make up and Hair, Cinematography, Best Adapted Screenplay and Costume Design categories.
Brooklyn was named outstanding British film while Amy has taken the documentary award. Wild Tales won the BAFTA for Best Film Not In The English Language.
Superb (but underused) in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the Game Of Thrones actress wore a gown that made her look too blocky. A group called Creatives of Colour Network protested outside the ceremony against a lack of racial diversity in show business.
The movie awards season has been dominated by debate about why the film industry remains dominated by white men.
Rating his own chances of winning the Best Actor Bafta for a second year in a row, he said: “I doubt it very much but I’m thrilled to be invited”. Instead, the award was presented to him on screen by actor Jamie Foxx and Poitier’s daughter.

British director Sir Ridley Scott will be hoping for his first Bafta win in the director category after being nominated for The Martian.
