Bernie Sanders Gaining On Hillary Clinton In Illinois
At one point during the debate, Sanders told Clinton sharply, “One of us ran against Barack Obama”.
“I’m not saying Barack Obama isn’t a great president, I support him”, he said.
At the sixth Democratic debate in Wisconsin, former Senator and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton (D) argued that Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders’ tuition-free college proposal was unrealistic and would rely too much on the cooperation of Republican governors that do not share Sanders’ goals. This debate marked a change from the previous issue-centric debates to a more heated discussion of the candidates’ personal records as the primary race tightens.
The rivals continued to debate about race relations, the economy, and an unexpected quarrel about former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger’s support of Clinton.
Bernie Sanders has more than 200 aides on the ground in the US state, which holds its presidential primary in two weeks.
After routing Clinton in New Hampshire by double digits, Sanders met with the Rev. Al Sharpton in Harlem on Wednesday as the two candidates focus on the more diverse electorate of Nevada, South Carolina and the multiple states holding primaries and caucuses in March.
Seeking to boost his support with minorities, Mr Sanders called for reforms to a “broken criminal justice system” that incarcerates a disproportionate number of minorities.
But despite flagging support among women in those early-vote states, Clinton still boasts the endorsements of groups like Planned Parenthood and NARAL Pro-Choice America. However, who more than Hillary Clinton would push for women’s issues? “Well, I know journalists have asked who you do listen to on foreign policy, and we have yet to know who that is”, said Clinton. Participating will be Trump, Cruz, Florida Sen.
The mayor also accused Sanders of taking a “shortcut” by running as a Democrat instead of remaining an independent.
Sanders retorted that this was a “low blow”, saying he’s worked with the president for seven years (Obama recently hosted him in a private Oval Office meeting) and that, together, Democrats have “made enormous progress”.
In Thursday’s debate, Sanders noted he did not choose to be that voice – and that his opponent, Clinton, did.
“I think it shows how desperate the Republicans are to prevent me from becoming the nominee”, Clinton said about American Crossroads’ efforts in an interview on ABC. Sanders familiar “27 dollars” chant was said, highlighting the fact he does not have a Super Pac and the average donation is $27. There really is no plausible way Mr. Sanders will be elected president in the fall. “In my view, the Government of a democratic society has a moral responsibility to play a vital role in making sure all of our people have a decent standard of living”, he said.
She also laid out her loyalty to President Obama, promising to strengthen his Affordable Care Act and continue his legacy, mentioning his name 21 times.
