Datsyuk surpasses 900 points as Red Wings top Bruins 6-5
The Wings began the third period with a power play, but the Bruins scored shorthanded 38 seconds in to tie the game, 5-5.
That came 22 seconds after Helm’s second goal of the game and seventh goal of the season.
Tuukka Rask was pulled for the second time in his last three starts as the Bruins were unable to match Detroit’s pace in a high-scoring game.
The game wouldn’t stay tied for long. The Bruins had jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first on goals from Brad Marchan, Zach Trotman and Loui Eriksson, but that lead was gone just 3:13 into the second period. Krejci picked up his 30th assist of the season on the play.
Henrik Zetterberg also had two goals. The Red Wings now have 67 through 56 games, while the Bruins are in third place with 66 points. But after holding that lead in a back-and-forth first period, the Bruins seemed to crumble in the second. The Bruins could do little to shut down Detroit’s best players, and instead Pavel Datsyuk, Henrik Zetterberg and Justin Abdelkader thoroughly dominated the B’s defenders.
The teams went to the room with the Bruins up 3-2 on the Wings. It was his second goal. Helm took a nice slap pass from Xavier Ouellet and when looking to feed a teammate in front, ended up banking it off the Bruins defender and into the net. After recording a goal and an assist in Saturday’s loss to Carolina, Tavares has registered four tallies and five assists during his run while Okposo has scored three goals and set up five others on his streak.
Darren Helm had two goals tonight. After a terrific rush up the ice by Helm, his original attempt failed but the puck came back to him and he buried it by Rask, who was yanked immediately after the goal was scored.
Boston got goals from two unlikely sources (Dennis Seidenberg, Joonas Kemppainen) to draw even in the third period. That stretch includes wins in five of six in Detroit and two more to open this season’s series – a 3-1 home victory on November 14 and a 3-2 overtime win on November 25 at Detroit.
Ater 40 minutes of play the game remained 5-4 in favor of the Wings.
Marchand is currently the fifth-leading goal scorer in the National Hockey League and with the way he is scoring now, his rapid rise up the charts may continue. Zetterberg was credited with the goal, and the Red Wings held on to their 6-5 lead until the end.
In New York, Derek Stepan scored twice in the third period to lead the New York Rangers to a 3-1 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers.
The Bruins return to action on Tuesday night when they visit the Columbus Blue Jackets.
