Retired servicemen want to return degrees to JNU
Evidence has emerged that anti-India slogans were actually raised by Hindutva affiliate student body ABVP, in a brazen attempt at framing the students. The issue has been politicized since then as leaders of opposition parties have entered into a war of words.
He was sent to three-day police custody after the Delhi Police told the court that they wanted to probe his alleged links to “terrorist groups”.
Vice Chancellor of JNU M Jagadesh Kumar said, “While the JNU community upholds the right to free debate on campus, the University strongly condemns the use of the University as a platform for activities that violate the Constitution and the laws of the land”.
A faculty of Ambedkar University said, “Today it is JNU, tomorrow it could be any other university”.
Last month a young scholar from India’s lowest Dalit caste committed suicide, sparking protests over social discrimination after he was suspended from Hyderabad University for allegedly assaulting the head of the student wing of Modi’s party.
The police on February 12 arrested the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU) President Kanhaiya Kumar on charges of sedition and started, what many are calling, a “witch-hunt” to curtail freedom of speech at campuses as well as growing intolerance for dissent in the country.
Kashmir is not merely BJP’s problem but the nation’s problem and every government has worked earnestly to drive home the point in the mindsets with reason and not with guns.
Notably, JNU unit of ABVP led by JNUSU Jt Secretary has raised objection with various students organisations including All India Students Association and All India Students Federation being a part of the event. The university is literally the universe for raising these very questions and expressing these dissenting ideas and opinions, regardless of how different and hard they are.
Initially, the crackdown in JNU was met with silence from the political fronts, including the left, the university’s dominant ideological force.
The students’ union declared a strike in the university from Monday onwards.
The case was registered on Friday under Section of 124 A (sedition) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of IPC against unknown persons at Vasant Kunj (North) Police station following complaints by BJP MP Maheish Girri and ABVP.
“The Left-progressive organizations were present at the programme only to ensure that no violence takes place, as ABVP had called in hooligans from DU to disrupt the program and the general atmosphere in the campus”.
They said police picked them up while they were on-route for a performance in CP. They claimed that CPM leader’s daughter was involved in the anti-national sloganeering at JNU Confirming the attack, CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury said “they tried to write slogans like Pakistan Zindabad at our office board”.
