NYPD Investigating Eliot Spitzer Assault Allegations
Authorities are investigating allegations that disgraced former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer assaulted a woman at a Manhattan hotel, sources told NBC News.
Police were called to The Plaza, one of New York’s most famous hotels, on Saturday night after Svetlana Travis, 25, accused him of attacking her.
According to these sources, Travis called police on her cell phone at about 8 p.m.to report a breakdown and that she had cut her wrist.
NY police department have opened an investigation.
Mr Spitzer was never charged.
Spitzer resigned as governor in 2008 following an investigation into financial transaction that revealed he had paid for sex. By that time, Travis had also told the 911 operator that she no longer needed help, according to the report. A statement from Spitzer’s spokeswoman Lisa Linden says “there is no truth to the allegation“. “For this reason, I am resigning from the office of governor”.
The New York Daily News and CNN.com published a similar description of events.
Before that, he was the state’s well-respected, hard-charging attorney general. He tried for a political comeback bid in 2013, running for controller in 2013 against Scott Stringer. However, he lost the Democratic primary.
In December the New York Post reported Mr Spitzer split from his wife and started a relationship with New York Mayor Bill de Blasio’s former spokeswoman Lis Smith.
