48 people rescued from stuck tram cars at ski resort
The people who were stuck had to rappel to safety through a hatch in the bottom of the trams, the station says.
Paula Tracy, who was stranded on one tram, said the skiers felt a “severe jolt” before it stopped.
The trams came to a halt just before 2pm and blankets were sent to the top auto at 3pm, about 20 minutes before the call to evacuate.
All of the stuck riders were given a voucher for another day at Cannon Mountain, and lift mechanics were working to correct the issue with the tramway so it could be opened back up as soon as possible. “A rope gets put up to the top or down from the vehicle and it’s attached to a sling and we essentially lower people down on a sling”.
‘It was a bit harrowing, especially to be lowered from the floor of the tram on a cable, ‘ Tracy told WCVB.
A spokesman for Cannon Mountain said: “The issue that caused the tram to stop operating today is not a quick and easy fix”.
Some passengers were taking the tram ride to the top of the mountain to view the scenic surroundings from the warm lodge, she said, and hadn’t planned or dressed to be in the cold weather for long.
She said most of the people on board were adults, primarily skiers.
The staff at Cannon Mountain said they could see the tram suspended about 40 feet off the ground from the parking lot and the highway.

Emergency personnel were on both the summit and base of the mountain, but no injuries were reported.
