Error 53 on iPhone linked with Touch ID, iOS 9
The “Error 53” function effectively stops the phone from working if they are fixed by someone who doesn’t work for Apple. The error message bricks the unofficially repaired devices, because of which users permanently lose all their saved data – including messages, photos, and videos. A new software update is disabling iPhone 6 devices for repairs not done by Apple.
An Apple statement read: “Error 53 is the result of security checks created to protect our customers”.
So when iOS detects this pairing failing (for example if it has been serviced by an unauthorised technician or different components added) then touch ID, including Apple Pay, is disabled to make the device secure. “There is no warning, and there’s no way that I know of to bring it back to life”. It will give up to $500 for used phones without cracked screens or broken buttons. The Error 53 issue has many loyal Apple customers up in arms over the non-replacement policy.
It seems that according to Apple, the error message will appear when an unauthorized person has tampered with a security procedure which enables fingerprint recognition.
Aside from killing your device, critics charge that Apple is also killing the livelihood of third-party technicians with the latest iOS update.
The other perplexing issue is that some have reported Error 53 problems without subjecting their iPhones to any kind of third-party repairs whatsoever.
Apple has recommended taking the phone to an Apple Store, but not all iPhone users have official Apple fix centres in their areas.
Tech boss of iFixit, Kyle Wiens told The Guardian this is causing a huge problem for iPhone fans.
Some have suggested the move could go against laws on competition, as it means people will only be able to get their phone repaired by Apple, which is much more expensive. The program rolls out in certain stores in the U.S. today, and will be adopted by other Apple Stores in the coming weeks.
