Reavie grabs Pebble Beach first round lead
Sung Kang of South Korea beams as he talks about his brush with…
On another gorgeous day, Mickelson and Kang each raised talk about a 59. Four birdies over the first five holes saw Lefty makes his move, and an eagle at the 10th put the American in contention to break 60. But if there was a key shot in his second round, it was a hybrid that traveled all of 6 feet.
“I mean honestly, I’m only (eight) back and on Pebble, you get a couple good low rounds and you never know”, he said. Unfortunately, he would play the last 8 in 1-over-par and settled for a 6-under-par 65.
Mickelson goes to Pebble Beach on Saturday as he goes after a record-tying fifth victory in this event. After an even-par 72, Kang fired a blistering 11-under-par 60 at Monterey.
Freddie Jacobson (69 at Spyglass Hill) and Chez Reavie (70 at Pebble Beach) were tied with Mickelson at 10 under.
“I’m 1 under on the par 5s, and from where I’ve been, they have pretty much all been par 4s for me”, Spieth said. “I didn’t expect to play 1 over coming in”.
World number one Jordan Spieth, back on the PGA Tour after playing tournaments in Abu Dhabi and Singapore, again struggled with the pace of the greens as he carded a 69 at Monterey Peninsula for a three-under total.
Rose said: “I heard some odd reports about Spyglass, like the first few holes are great, then it disappears into the hills and it’s not that good”.
Kang said Romano was wrong, but he was dead right. Some of them he read on his own.
Daniel Im of the United States (68) and Theunis Spangenberg (71) of South Africa were tied for third on 4 under alongside Haydn Porteous, who won the tour’s Joburg Open last month. What really wowed fans, though, was Timberlake’s impromptu performance of his song Drink You Away with Alfonso Ribeiro (you know him better as Carlton from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air). You can focus on closing out the tournament in one spot.
The 25-year-old from Rotorua, fresh off a fourth-place finish at the Phoenix Open, rolled in six birdies to go with 11 pars and a bogey on the par-3 7th to improve 52 spots on the leaderboard. “He gets like nearly a third more earnings from TV drama show”.
“I like the view, I like the view”, he said in very limited English.
Defending champion Brandt Snedeker and former champion Dustin Johnson sit well back at even-par through 36 holes. He chipped to 15 feet and saved par.
While Mickelson ran out of steam over his last seven holes, Kang seemed unstoppable as he needed just 24 putts in his round.
He also made birdies at par fours 13 and 17 on his way to a five-under 66 to be six-under for the tournament and five shots off the lead.
Mickelson carded an eagle on the 10th hole but bogeys on the 12th and 18th holes cost him the lead at the end of the round. The unfamiliarity worked both ways, because Romano hadn’t heard of Kang until they were paired for this AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.
