Pregnant Victorian woman diagnosed with Zika virus
Yolo County on Wednesday reported California’s first case of the Zika virus this year, adding to concerns about the virus’ spread from Latin America.
The Public Health Agency of Canada has confirmed Canadian travel-related cases of the Zika virus from Central and South America as well as the Caribbean but say that the mosquito that carries the virus is not present in the country.
Brazilian authorities say they have already alerted the World Health Organisation about the fatalities.
Many questions surround the presumed link between Zika and microcephaly. More than 50 cases have been reported in the U.S. The virus was confirmed after a blood test was conducted on the patient.
Castro said development of a vaccine could come as quickly as within one year, but said that another two years would likely be needed for any large-scale rollout of a successful vaccine. But the rest are still pending.
Officials did not release many more details other than that the woman in DE was not pregnant, but Philadelphia’s health department is not aware of any cases among area residents.
Victoria state’s health minister Jill Hennessy said: “A Victorian woman has been diagnosed this week with Zika virus after recently returning from a country where Zika virus is prevalent”.
A spokeswoman for the AFP said on Friday that officers contracted the virus while attending humanitarian work in the Solomon Islands, and all of those affected were being supported by the AFP and the Australian government. He said that the current flu season poses a greater risk to the public.

That’s why the major concern continues to be for pregnant women who travel to tropical climates.
“The virus, normally can cause either no symptoms in about 80 percent of cases or a mild illness that resolves usually after a few days”, he said. Some 48 percent said Zika had not changed the likelihood of their visiting those destinations, while others did not know.
