Sheeran bests Lamar for Grammy song of the year, Rihanna cancels
Taylor Swift may have lost the Song of the Year trophy at the 2016 Grammy Awards, but she’s definitely going home with another award: Friend of the Year.
Best urban contemporary album- “Beauty Behind the Madness”, The Weeknd.
It also marked a first for Justin Bieber – He won best dance recording for Where Are U Now, a collaboration with Skrillex and Diplo.
Monday night’s 58th annual Grammy Awards will feature a showdown between Taylor Swift, who received seven nominations; “To Pimp a Butterfly” artist Kendrick Lamar, who topped all performers with 11 nods; and The Weeknd, who equaled Swift’s tally. He won his first-ever Grammy earlier in the evening, for Best Pop Solo Performance for “Thinking Out Loud“.
Swift went to Sheeran, 24, and gave him a hug before he made his way to the stage, and then she joyfully covered her face with her hands, as she often does when she herself wins at awards shows. However, Rihanna caused fans some disappointment by pulling out of her performance at the last minute.
“I just want to say before saying the victor that we need to make every single thing accessible to every single person with a disability”, Wonder said to applause.
A classic love song with Sheeran’s guitar and voice, “Thinking Out Loud” has quickly become a favorite at weddings, proms and other romantic occasions. But it’s a bit of a boilover nonetheless with Alabama Shakes winning for Don’t Wanna Fight No More, and reminding the room that you can tear paint off walls and punch holes in those same walls even if you don’t have a y chromosome.
Kanye West, who released his new album, “The Life of Pablo”, on Saturday, isn’t scheduled to perform, but he’s been raising eyebrows for days with his tweets.
Best R&B album- “Black Messiah”, D’Angelo and The Vanguard.
Taylor Swift, wearing a bejeweled bodysuit with her hair in a short bob, kicked off the Grammy awards with her latest hit song “Out of the Woods” on a foggy stage decorated with sparse trees.
Best country album- “Traveller“, Chris Stapleton.
Best country duo/group performance- “Girl Crush“, Little Big Town.
