Supreme Court vacancy highlights stakes in presidential race
The story behind it is that Mort Zuckerman, the New York Daily News owner, hates Donald Trump with a passion.
Presidential historian Mike Purdy, however, cites a precedent in the late Republican President Theodore Roosevelt.
While overnight polling indicated Trump is likely to retain his following, which appreciates his candor and outrage, his rhetoric raises doubts in the minds of others about his temperament and judgment.
W. sounded a resonantly anti-Trump note by praising South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, and saying, “Thank goodness our country welcomed her parents when they immigrated here in 1969”. “It started the chain of events that leads now to the migration, maybe the destruction of Europe”. After watching Bush aggressively go up against Trump in Sunday’s debate in Greenville and hearing Bush embrace his family legacy more, he says he’s now deciding whether to vote for the former Florida governor or Rubio.
So far, at least, it is a war that many Republicans are willing to wage alongside Trump. South Carolina Republicans then gave George W. Bush a critical primary victory in 2000, breathing new life into his campaign after he’d been defeated in New Hampshire by John McCain. The survey showed Trump with the backing of 42 percent of Republican voters, more than double the support of his closest rival, Sen.
Sens. Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio continue to feud ahead of Saturday’s SC primary, with Cruz pushing back against Rubio’s charge that he’s a liar.
Benjamin said that she also agrees with Trump that the war wasted money that could have been used to rebuild the country’s infrastructure – a theme the group uses in a campaign called “Bring out war dollars home”. He still trails Rubio in SC and nationally. While Trump would not say whether he considered Bush to be a failed president and declined to label him responsible for the 9/11 attacks, the former reality TV star repeatedly noted that “the Word Trade Center came down during the reign of George Bush”. “It makes you wonder how they would deal with (Russian President Vladimir) Putin”. Cruz told reporters in SC.
In a speech that was largely centered around national security and terrorism, Bush reflected on the attacks of September 11, 2001 – and the “tough calls” he had to make in the days that followed — as he presented his brother as the most “measured and thoughtful” candidate in the GOP pack.
Cruz is using the potential vacancy to build on his long-standing argument that Republicans should select a nominee with the most conservative credentials. He got busy during last Saturday’s debate calling Ted Cruz “the biggest liar”, and forcing Jeb Bush to defend the political liability that is his family. And it can’t help that so many Republicans who have worked with him can’t stand the guy. A candidate who can win in November’s general election.
“It was like a demolition derby….” I don’t even think he’s a good debater.
Now six remain; and with Ben Carson going nowhere, only five have a chance to win the nomination. In New Hampshire, Bush’s mother and former first lady, Barbara Bush, campaigned with her younger son.
As this seems to be the year of the outsider, we asked about political experience.
Trump’s strident criticism reopened a wound that party leaders had hoped was in the past. You’re behind Governor Bush, Jeb Bush and his candidacy. “It’s a bridge too far. They both have trouble controlling their mouths”, Purdy said, likening Roosevelt to Trump. I think he just wants to wrap this up. He’s also a reminder to voters eager to break with the political establishment that Jeb Bush would be the third man from his family to serve as president. He is essentially repeating the Left’s “antiwar” refrain: “Bush lied”. And seven years after leaving office, he is hugely popular in his party – a November Bloomberg poll showed 77% of Republicans holding a favorable view of the ex-President.
“He has been very clear on the foreign policy side that the Iraq War was a disaster”. Politics breeds contempt: and one shouldn’t, we are told, ever despise other human beings, since God loves them all as much as he loves you or me. They want politicians who are reasoned, collegial and presidential.
Taking issue with Trump’s claim he opposed the Iraq war from the start, Limbaugh said, “He jumped all over the Bush family and the Iraq war and claimed that he was on record way, way back as always being opposed to the Iraq war, that it was going to muddy up the Middle East and cause a quagmire”. “It was shameful all around, actually, and it’ll put us in a bind as a party”.
