The Revenant bags Bafta awards
Leonardo DiCaprio says shooting “The Revenant” was colder than being submerged in icy waters in the final scenes of “Titanic”. Americans and Brits, as well as global nominees, flock over to see if their awards season tally might add up to an Oscars win, but the best thing about BAFTAs?
At the BAFTA on Sunday adventure scored over romance and the “Revenant” won the best film award over Todd Haynes’ 1950s all-female romance “Carol”.
Earlier in the evening, the surprise came from Mad Max: Fury Road, which won the majority of technical BAFTA with four trophies for best makeup, editing, costumes and sets.
First time BAFTA victor John Boyega also posted a few snaps from the evening, celebrating his first BAFTA win as EE’s Rising Star for 2016. The Wall Street satire The Big Short won for Best adapted screenplay, while Best original screenplay went to Tom McCarthy’s Spotlight, about the Boston Globe newspaper’s expose of the Catholic church’s cover-up of sexual abuse by priests.
The 41-year-old Titanic actor, who was presented the award by Tom Cruise, plays fur-trapper Hugh Glass in the film.
IRISH drama Brooklyn scooped a Bafta for Outstanding British Film at a ceremony in London last night. “I feel very strongly that it may possibly be Leo’s year”.
As for where DiCaprio stands on the issue, Winslet explained, “he doesn’t care about the door”.
“Mom, happy birthday, I love you very much”. “I didn’t grow up in a life of privilege and this woman drove me three hours a day to a different school to show me a different opportunity”, he said.
Reacting to Asif Kapadia’s win for his docu Amy, based on Amy Winehouse, the late singer’s father, Mitch, wrote on Twitter: “Please don’t congratulate me on the Amy film winning BAFTA”. The victor is decided by public vote.
She said: “Idris Elba you’re making me nervous…”
The ceremony was controversial for British actor Stephen Fry, host of the awards ceremony, who closed down his Twitter account Monday morning in response to criticism of his joke describing one victor as “a bag lady”.
Among the men, Mark Rylance won the Best Supporting Actor for his role as British-born Soviet agent in India’s Reliance Entertainment-backed “Bridge of Spies”, which had nine nominations. “Thank God for time and the passing of it, that’s all I can say”.
