Local dog up for Best in Show
The 140th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is underway with four groups taking their turns around the ring on Monday, including the Hound group, which produced the Best In Show victor previous year. Those dogs now go on to the second night, where they will compete for Best in Show, along with the group winners from Tuesday’s (Feb. 16) competition.
Meanwhile, a 10-year-old Boston terrier-beagle mix named Hailey won a separate title for the No. 1 mixed-breed agility dog, a win that left owner and handler Karen Profenna drying her eyes.
One other local dog will compete on Tuesday as well: Steele’s Lagotto Romagnolo Mack will challenge for best of breed.
Leading up to each show, Johnny Avello, director of race and sports operations for Wynn Las Vegas, releases his predictions for winning breeds. The dogs and their breeds come from all 50 states, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico and 12 other countries.
Non-Sporting Group victor: Bulldog, GCH Imperious Hamitup Southern Bell (full information here).

PennLive multimedia journalist Amanda Berg is on the scene of the 2016 Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, one of the most prestigious dog shows in the world. “When I’m judging, I’m asking myself, ‘Is this dog most able to perform the task it was bred to originally?'” Almost 3,000 canines are battling it out to be named top dog at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
At last year’s Westminster, Chuck won Best of Opposite Sex for his breed; a female cairn was chosen to represent the breed in the terrier group judging.
“Like they said, he’s America’s dog”, handler Tristan Huebner said.
Rumor and her co-breeder, co-owner, and handler Kent Boyles of Wisconsin will appear on the CBS This Morning show today.
She said Connor was always there for her during the rough time. Karen Profenna allowed Hailey, her mixed breed all American dog, to get onto her back to show tricks at last year’s dog show.
The evening competition on Monday, Feb. 15, will be televised live on CNBC, and includes the Hound, Toy, Non-Sporting and Herding Groups.
For the dogs, Westminster might seem like just another show, Pierhal said. If she wins the top honor, she will advance to the sporting dogs competition. “I felt like he put every foot where it should be, which made it really enjoyable to have him out there”.
