India Far Superior At South Asian Games
Guwahati: The boxers hardly broke a sweat to scoop all the seven gold medals up for grabs, while shooters ended their campaign with an outstanding tally of 25 gold medals to ensure that India’s reign at the top remained unhindered at the 12th South Asian Games.
In the women’s individual event, Pallavi Retiwala won the gold with a time of 1:11:57, while team-mate Pooja Chaurushi got the silver in 1:12:36. He first topped qualifying with a score of 1170 and then led the finals from shot one to finish with a score of 453.3.
Narang, who won a bronze in the London Olympics in 10m air rifle, took part in all the three rifle events but failed to pick up a gold. Silver medals may seem nice but they would not want to miss out on gold medals, especially seeing how well their compatriots have performed in the other events.
On Sunday, Chain led the competition all through.
Bashir Ghulam Mustafa of Pakistan took the silver with 24 hits on target while another Indian Vijay Kumar, who had won a silver in this event in 2012 London Olympics, bagged the bronze. Bangladesh bagged the bronze after posting a score of 3398. In the capital city of Assam, there were just eight medal events and the Indians won all of them – six by shooters and two by triathlon players.
It was tough fight in the men’s final at the R G Baruah Sports Complex with both sides refusing to give in to their opponents. For the Indians, who led 21-7 at half time, captain Tejeswani Bai led from the front as she got a lot of “outs” as well as bonus points.
In handball, India dethroned Pakistan as regional champions in the men’s handball while their women counterparts also clinched the gold to stamp the home country’s supremacy in the discipline.
The Indians effected two “lonas” (two bonus points when entire opposition is out) to completely dominate the match against the hapless Bangladeshis. The women’s summit clash, though, was not up to the level which was witnessed in the men’s final as the Indians simply outplayed Bangladesh.
