NY police investigate assault claim against ex-Gov. Spitzer
Spitzer was elected Governor of NY in 2006, but was forced to resign two years later after he was linked to a prostitution operation.
Sources familiar with that investigation tell NBC News that on Saturday night, Spitzer and a woman in her mid-twenties entered New York’s iconic plaza hotel, and headed up to one of the rooms. The police department issued a statement confirming that detectives were investigating the case.
Spitzer sent the officers away, denying there was any problem.
Lisa Linden, Mr Spitzer’s spokeswoman, said there was no truth to the allegation. While at Roosevelt Hospital she told doctors of the incident with Spitzer, CBS New York reported. Police have not interviewed Spitzer, one of the law enforcement sources said.
The woman was admitted to a local hospital where she told staff that Spitzer had assaulted her in order to avoid further evaluation, according to Kaufmann. The injury was not sustained in the altercation, the official said.
That’s when, the New York Post reports, “the cops spied broken glass, bloodstains and clothing on the floor and started a search inside”. It appears some information on the phone was wiped remotely, according to the official.
Police have not arrested Spitzer, but would like to question him about the incident, sources said.
Travis, who reportedly described Spitzer as her boyfriend, then stopped cooperating, according to the Post’s sources.
Spitzer returned to the Plaza, where the woman had called 911 reporting a suicide attempt, Kaufmann said. The alleged victim went to hospital, as reported by CNN, with self-inflicted cuts on her wrists. Police have not spoken to her since her departure.
Spitzer, a Democrat, resigned two years into his term in 2008 amid revelations that he had sex with prostitutes. He ran for New York City Comptroller in 2013, but lost the Democratic primary. In 2010 and 2011, the politician co-hosted a political talk show on CNN.
