Albright expresses regret over comment about women in hell
The former secretary of state – and the first woman to hold the position – said “there’s a special place in hell for women who don’t help each other”, a phrase she’s used repeatedly throughout her public life, while she was campaigning for Hillary Clinton in New Hampshire on February 6. Hillary Clinton will always be there for you. Former secretary of state Hillary Clinton’s candidacy for the Democratic nomination for president and her possible election are historic, and clearly run against “establishment” presidential politics.
“She’s been saying that for as long as I’ve known her, which is about 25 years”, Clinton said.
Albright wrote an apology in the form of a New York Times op-ed Friday titled “My Undiplomatic Moment”, in which she blames the “excitement” of the rally for her mistake, while at the same time reiterating the statement that got her in trouble.
In the piece, Albright also emphasizes that gender equality and equal opportunity are still not national realities for women, which is why she encourages women to lift each other up with this particular catchphrase.
“While young women may not want to hear anything more from this aging feminist, I feel it is important to speak to women coming of age at a time when a viable female presidential candidate, once inconceivable, is a reality”, she wrote.
To conclude the op-ed, Albright says she hopes young women will “build on the progress” old feminists such as herself have made, and that the only way for that to happen is if “women help one another”.
The PBS debate, moderated by Gwen Ifill and Clinton Foundation donor Judy Woodruff, started slow but picked up when Albright’s divisive quote was brought up.
However, she added, she still believes women are obligated to help one another. “When it comes to the issues that are really on the frontlines, to whether we’re going to have equal pay, paid family leave, some opportunity for women to go as far as their hard work and talent takes them, I think we still have some barriers to knock down”. Clinton said she is running on her experience.
