Elections board predicts 10 percent turnout Tuesday
Bradley moved forward on Tuesday after a campaign that has been marked by partisanship. The statewide Supreme Court race will reduce the number of candidates from three to two for the April election.
Get to know the candidates in the nonpartisan primary election for state Supreme Court. When there was a vacancy on the state appeals court in 2015, Donald supported Bradley by allowing her to use him as a reference in her application, although he also recommended that the governor choose a different applicant for the post.
There isn’t much for Fond du Lac County voters to vote on during this primary election today.
He was appointed by Republican Gov. Tommy Thompson in 1996 and says it’s proof of his independence. “I hope voters in April and in future elections continue to demand action on criminal justice reform”, Donald said. Bradley finished with 251,823 votes, or 45%, Kloppenburg had 243,190 votes, or 43% of the vote, and Donald was eliminated with 68,373 votes, or just 12% of the vote.
Judge Donald is campaigning on a platform that would end partisan influence in the Supreme Court and bring an independent voice to the bench.
Judge Kloppenburg is the strongest, clearest alternative to Gov. Walker’s choice, Rebecca Bradley.
The race was officially nonpartisan, but the reality was otherwise, even as the candidates touted their own impartiality.
Town of Johnstown voters were among the five Rock County municipalities who chose Bradley with 48 votes, which is 10 more than they gave Kloppenburg. While he supported Justice Bradley taking over Justice Crooks seat past year, he has since started saying he believes she does not have enough experience. “My approach is to look at the facts, and the law, and apply the facts to the law, and then make a decision as to what is right”, said Judge Donald. She expands on the concept in a statement on her campaign website, which reads: “The role of a justice is to interpret the law, not invent it. The people of Wisconsin are best served by justices who understand and embrace their duty to state what the law is, not what they prefer it to be”. The Milwaukee County court is the link between Bradley and Donald.
