Mercedes Details Brand New Diesel Engine In E-Class
As the new generation of E-Class has been unveiled in Detroit last week, Mercedes has confirmed that Edition E will be the last variant for E-Class luxury sedan series.
Prof Dr Thomas Weber, member of the Daimler Board of Management with responsibility for group research and head of Mercedes-Benz Cars development, said, “The new family of engines embodies over 80 years of Mercedes-Benz diesel know-how”. The new turbo-diesel engine for the Mercedes-Benz E 220d is also the first four-cylinder engine to have an all-aluminum construction.
“In addition to the advantages in terms of emissions, this results in fuel savings, especially on short journeys”, the company adds. The German carmaker claims the new engine delivers around 13 percent lower fuel consumption and Carbon dioxide emissions along with a further increase in output (143 kW instead of 125 kW). Also expect Mercedes-Benz to update the interior with a more stylish and sportier feel to suit the exteriors. The maximum torque now stands at 295 pound-feet (400 Newton meters) and the engine has been mated to a nine-speed automatic gearbox.
But the benefits don’t end there. The new engine also has lower levels of noise as well as reduced vibration due to a newly-developed technology.
The OM 654 will be launched this spring on the E220 d, but it will soon power a large number of Mercedes-Benz models. The selective catalytic reduction systems will replace the current nitrous oxide trap exhaust systems. It will be offered in both longitudinal and transverse configurations. Mercedes says the engines will find broad application across the entire range of its cars and vans.
Fitted to the new E 220d, the OM 654 unit is capable of returning figures between 3.9-4.3L/100km on the combined cycle, and offers a 0-100km/h sprint time of 7.3 seconds.
