Flyers storm past Devils for 6-3 victory
Philadelphia Flyers center Nick Cousins (52) celebrates after scoring a goal as New Jersey Devils defenseman Damon Severson (28), right wing Jordin Tootoo (22) and goalie Cory Schneider (35) defend during the third period of an NHL hockey game, Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2016, in Newark, N.J. The Flyers won 6-3.
No matter. While the Devils were still on the five-minute power play, Tyler Kennedy scored his first goal this season, putting his team ahead, 1-0, with 7:59 left in the first.
“Both sides, specialty teams answered the bell when they needed to and a lot of guys, everybody in the lineup, competed hard”.
Claude Giroux had three assists for the Flyers, who were 2 for 4 on the power play while New Jersey was 1 for 7. “It was one of the biggest reasons we won that game”.
That tying goal led to Brayden Schenn’s 17th goal of the season, on the power play and the second point on a night in which he had three. Had MacDonald simply been called for slashing – and Blandisi not been penalized for embellishment, as he was after the big dive – the Devils would have had a power play.
With less than two months left in the season, the Flyers, who lost games to the Devils and Rangers this past weekend, are four points out of a playoff spot and five behind the Devils.
Gostisbehere has four goals and 12 assists during the run.
Palmieri got the Devils within two goals with his 21st of the season, but White scored into an empty net to close out the scoring. The 13-game streak are rookie records for the Flyers and National Hockey League defensemen. Simmonds screened Schneider on Gostisbehere’s 11th goal – two shy of equaling the Flyers’ rookie record for defensemen, 13 by Behn Wilson in 1978-79.
That was certainly the case Tuesday against the New Jersey Devils in a 6-3 win.
Schenn gave the Flyers a 2-1 lead at 7:55 of the second period with a power-play goal.
The Flyers killed a 5-on-3 power-play for the Devils for 1:05 early in the second with Pierre-Edouard Bellemare (tripping) and Ryan White (cross checking) each in the box. Simmonds took a pass from Giroux and sent the puck to Schenn in the slot just before skating behind the Devils net. The teams went to the first intermission tied 1-1 after a wild first 20 minutes. They spent most of the period on the penalty kill as defenseman Radko Gudas picked up a match penalty for an elbow to the head of Bobby Farnham. A little less than two minutes later, Adam Henrique appeared to give the Devils a 1-0 lead, but the goal was nullified by after a coach’s challenge caused a review, which showed that Lee Stempniak made contact with goalie Michal Neuvirth’s right leg in the crease.
“It’s about coming back, and we’ll see how the team responds”, Devils left winger Joseph Blandisi said.
He now has four points in seven games since being called up February 6 to fill in for Sean Couturier.
