Kasich has the last laugh, not Christie: Darcy cartoon gallery
According to exit polling data, Trump ran strongest among Republican voters who were anxious about immigration, the fate of the economy, and the threat of a terrorist attack in the US.
Clinton was scheduled to campaign in SC on Friday, after which, the two Democratic rivals were scheduled to attend a dinner event in Minnesota.
But with a field filled with numerous other options, including current and former governors and senators, Christie never consolidated support, despite being praised by both fans and rivals as one of the Republican Party’s best communicators. “Bernie Sanders has talked about these issues for the last 40 days”. Ted Cruz speaks with supporters in Hollis, New Hampshire after his third place finish in the primary on February 9, 2016. He drew contrasts with Trump as he told a crowd of 500 in Myrtle Beach that Texans and South Carolinians are more alike than not. As president, Sanders said he would “end the absurdity of women today making 79 cents on the dollar compared to men”, while Clinton said she would get women the “equal pay that we deserve”.
Whether it’s the e-mail mess, the Clinton Foundation scandals or her Goldman Sachs speeches – or all of it and more (so much more) – Democrats are refusing to let Hillary walk away with the nomination.
“He was exposed, even though he is right and Chris Christie is wrong: Barack Obama was not too young to be an effective president”.
When pollster Frank Luntz replayed clips of the meeting for a focus group in New Hampshire, after the first Republican debate, Republicans in the room said they were still unhappy, three years later. The key date ahead is March 1, Super Tuesday, when about half of the delegates for both parties are decided. But a mood of pessimism does not appear to be a distinguishing feature of Trump voters.
As the field moved from Iowa to New Hampshire, Rubio became the star following a breakout performance in the caucuses.
Rubio’s campaign manager, Terry Sullivan, a Palmetto State veteran, has brought in reinforcements, already having added the consultant who headed John McCain’s successful 2008 S.C. campaign.
The campaign did see a brief surge in December, with one poll showing Christie placing as high as second in New Hampshire.
Rubio, of course, is not the only presidential contender whose children are beginning to play a more significant role on the campaign trail.
Meanwhile, GOP voters are furious with their elected officials. After several minutes of nodding and acknowledging those who commented from the audience, he thanked the people of New Hampshire for helping him win the primary. Radio and TV ads featuring George W. Bush have started airing in SC.
Seeking votes at a local business in Charleston, Kasich worked to burnish his reputation as a results-oriented leader. “So I’m not anxious about what the other folks say”, Kasich said. “And if the country doesn’t solve its problems, it gets flabby”.
Trump was the only Republican with no campaign stops in SC, redirecting his typically unconventional campaign to Florida, where he planned to hold a rally in Tampa.
Though he placed fourth on Tuesday, Bush was hoping that Rubio’s slump would forestall his own ouster from the race.
Still, by finishing an unexpected second, Kasich kept alive his hope of maintaining his candidacy until the race reaches MI and his home state of OH next month.
