The Flash: Who Is The Man In The Iron Mask?
Here we are on what appears to be the Jay Garrick redemption train, and what does the show do? For one, Zoom can’t directly steal someone’s speed, otherwise he would’ve done that to Barry (Grant Gustin) already; he’s only keeping Wells (Tom Cavanagh) alive so he can take Barry’s speed. Earth-2 Barry convinces The Flash that if he just puts his mind to it, he can phase fast enough to pass through the wall.
He could be either be Edward Clariss/The Rival, Jay Garrick’s comic book adversary from Earth-2 who attempted to recreate Jay’s speed through a serum called Velocity 9 – sound familiar? The Earth-2 crew says their goodbyes to Barry and Cisco, though Wells and Jessie decide to join them on the other side.
Patton recently talked to TVLine about her Earth-2 character, Detective West, and revealed that she thought the character was “awesome” and is what she had wanted for Iris all along.
Once Barry himself ended up in Zoom’s dungeon, we also saw that a man in an unusual metal mask was also stuck there. In the comics, Zolomon was Wally West’s greatest adversary, his Zoom.
Of course there are some plot holes here.
This week’s episode of The CW’s superhero series “The Flash” acquainted viewers with the Earth-2 setting and showed them how the lives of the show’s various characters have diverged from their Earth-1 counterparts in the new alternate world.
Back on Earth-1, Geomancer is still making earthquakes, trying to goad Jay (Teddy Sears) into confronting him. Nonetheless, whether The Flash can keep the momentum going with Earth-2 now sealed shut is another issue.
So, could Zoom be a future version of Jay? A member of the team is actually the villain. We’re nearly two-thirds of the way through this second season, so it was about time for Zoom to graduate from fleeting, scary cameos to full-fledged Big Bad status. Snatching him back by driving a hand through Jay’s chest is something else. Snatching him back to Earth-2 is one thing. Is the man in the iron mask the “real” Jay Garrick of Earth-2? Thanks to Jay’s costume, he face is clearly visible.
Barry Allen and Cisco Ramone’s Earth 2 adventures will come to an end in The Flash season 2’s upcoming chapter.
But no matter why Zoom wants it, the real hook is who is he? Barry and Jesse were able to figure out that he was trying to communicate something about Jay, though Zoom intervened before he was able to say anymore.
Barry Allen was just 11 years old when his mother was killed in a freaky and terrifying incident and his father was falsely convicted of the murder. This explains Hunter’s shady behavior and how Zoom and Hunter were in two different realities.
For starters, Jay lied about how he lost his speed. Yet it does seem to make sense viewed in light of the man in the mask’s message from last night’s episode.
What if Jay Garrick is a twin…hense the man in the iron mask reference? Wells decides to evacuate the building to save the occupants but he and Cisco are determined to track down Wells and Barry. The Velocity drugs Caitlin has been giving Jay to restore his Speed Force have a unsafe side effect, and that side effect is Zoom. So Zoom traveled back in time to find his younger self and is using him to build a cure for his dying cells. Jay and Joe must fix the breach so Barry, Cisco, Wells, and Jessie can make it through.
Zoom just planned to cure his dying body until the breach opened up to Earth-2. Zoom arrives and stops them from getting anymore information. If this Garrick is really Clariss or Zolomon, what does Jay look like under the mask? I’m really hoping this version of Caitlin returns at some point and we learn more about what drove her down such a dark path in the first place. Frost isn’t so into that idea at first, but Cisco is able to establish a rapport with her by drawing on his bond with her Earth-1 doppelganger, proving that friendship transcends any dimension.
The Flash airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
