Now, posters in Jadavpur demand freedom for Kashmir, Manipur, Nagaland (Third Lead)
The posters had been signed by a group called “RADICAL” and described by both the Jadavpur University Students Union (JUSU) and VC as a “fringe” group allegedly responsible for raising “pro-Afzal” slogans at a rally on Tuesday. Officers from the south suburban division, who have in the past handled several high-decibel protests by Jadavpur students, too said that not many on the campus supported the slogans.
The posters appearing on Wednesday morning were purportedly put up by a group which called itself “Radical”.
Slogans in favour of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru were raised yesterday at a rally brought out by Jadavpur University students to express solidarity with their JNU counterparts who are agitating against the arrest of their leader Kanhaiya Kumar for alleged sedition. State ST incharge, Manoj Kumar; State Executive Member Sidhant Randhawa, Jammu Mahanagar Secretary Naina Dogra, Bhavani Bharti, Dr.Anil, Jasveer were also present among the hub of protesting students. The SFI, the students’ wing of the CPI(M), also condemned anti-national slogans.
The BJP supporters chanted slogans, calling the reporters and students “anti-nationals” and demanding that they leave India and go to Pakistan.
The vice-chancellor of the university Suranjan Das, said that the posters had been put up by “fringe elements”.
He ruled out lodging any police complaint, saying university was a place for rational thinking and free speech.
Prominent academicians and scientists from many of India’s prestigious institutions on Wednesday expressed their dismay on the recent events that threw the academic atmosphere at the Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi to the winds. She further said that they all need to apologise as they had challenge the integrity of the nation by their doings. “What they need is a good thrashing then only they will understand the true value of nationalism”.
“Though no case has been lodged, we are thoroughly investigating the matter”.
Meanwhile, the SFI state unit additionally distanced themselves from the slogans that have been raised through the protest.
The CPI-M backed Students Federation of India, CPI supported All India Students Federation and the Revolutionary Socialist Party’s arm Progressive Students Union were among those who took part in the rally from College Square to the Y Channel in the city centre.
