“The Revenant”, “Mad Max” dominate winners list at BAFTA Awards
The American star was the firm favourite for the prize, with even his British rival Eddie Redmayne tipping him to get the trophy.
Mark Rylance won best supporting actor for his role as British-born Soviet agent in “Bridge of Spies”, which had nine nominations.

Leonardo DiCaprio won the Best Actor trophy for “The Revenant”, which was also lauded with the Best Film Award, Best Director Award, Best Cinematography and Best Sound. According to BBC, the Mexican director described the win as “overwhelming” and DiCaprio’s “talent and commitment” to such “risky project” allowed the film to stay alive.
Previously films like “Romeo + Juliet” and “Four Wedding and a Funeral” won big time at the BAFTA awards.
The EE Rising Star Award, voted for by the public, was presented to John Boyega.

The 41 year old actor was on the Kiss Cam along with the 81 year old Harry Potter actress, Maggie Smith and Leo didn’t waste any moment as he immediately went for a peck.
However Co Carlow actress Saoirse Ronan, who was nominated for her role in the film, based on the novel by Colm Tóibín, lost out in the best actress category.
The head of the British film academy said she supported the protesters’ aims. “Often we have talked about how hard this movie was to make, and it was, but we are so proud”, DiCaprio told reporters.
The obituary section included tributes to Alan Rickman, Maureen O’Hara, Omar Sharif, David Bowie, Ron Moody, Frank Finlay, Saeed Jaffrey and Christopher Lee.
The BAFTA awards, which were held at the Royal Opera House in the center of London, are often seen as one of the indicators towards possible success at the Hollywood Oscars at the end of this month.
