Wizards make last-second deal for disgruntled Suns forward
National Basketball Association teams have been pretty quiet ahead of Thursday’s 3 p.m. ET trade deadline, but the Phoenix Suns made some noise at the last minute.
As ESPN’s Zach Lowe and Yahoo’s Adrian Wojnarowski are reporting, the Wizards are sending Kris Humphries, DeJuan Blair and a protected first-round pick in 2016 to Phoenix for Morris.
The Phoenix Suns finally managed to get rid of Markieff Morris.
Markieff’s first game with the Wizards will likely be Friday night, and he will get to see his brother as Washington is scheduled to take on Detroit.
Morris had his best numbers a year ago, in his first season as a starter.
If Morris can keep it together on the court this trade could end up being worthwhile.
The Kansas product was selected No. 13 overall in the 2011 NBA Draft. The Wizards now have the 12th worst record in the National Basketball Association. Blair’s contract has a $2 million team option for next season, and Humphries is under contract for $4.6 million next season.
Suns GM Ryan McDonough was smart to wait until now to deal Morris, who had nearly no trade value earlier this season. This move essentially allows the Suns to be more flexible with the turn-over of their roster quicker than if they had Morris for another three years. He began the season as the team’s starting power forward.
Markieff and his brother Marcus are still facing felony aggravated assault charges from a January 2015 incident at a recreation center in Phoenix.
The question on everyone’s mind, though, is what the Wizards gave up in exchange for Morris.
