Women’s group urges sponsors to suspend ties to Peyton Manning
Manning played for the Colts for 13 years before galloping to Denver, where he played four seasons that culminated in the Super Bowl victory over Carolina earlier this month. This is not, as one sideline philosopher once put it, what we’re looking for. Not even in the place where they love him the most. In some circles-and not just in New England-there’s a belief that the halo has been knocked from Manning’s head.
King read the lawsuit and wrote: “The book, which trashes the character of Dr Jamie Naughright, continues to be sold to this very day, while Peyton Manning continues to benefit from his reputation not only as a superstar quarterback, but also an individual of high moral character”. These are from a complaints Naughright filed with the Tennessee Human Rights Commission and Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. In the book he denies the sexual assault allegations saying instead that he was “mooning” track athlete Malcolm Saxon, he also describes Dr, Naughright as having a “vulgar mouth”. According to ESPN, Dr. Naughright reported the incident, but Manning was never investigated by the police.
One of the key points, McCann writes, is whether Manning made contact with Naughright when he exposed himself in the trainer’s room (a court has yet to rule whether he did). Apparently the concept of letting sleeping dogs lie is foreign to Manning. However, she included the allegations in a 1997 sexual harassment lawsuit against the University of Tennessee, eventually settling with the university and agreeing to leave her job.
Here’s the reality: as much as people want answers and the truth, to take a line from A Few Good Men, they “may not be entitled to it”.
Ramsey had said in a statement that every state agency in Tennessee has been required to comply with the Uniform Administrative Procedures Act since 1974, so “the implication that the UAPA is a process created by the University of Tennessee and reserved for student-athletes is ludicrous”. Her court filing said it was “untenable” for Naughright and the school for her to remain, and she left in December 2001. Fulmer, according to the report “said that the specific comment made by an athlete was “seriously rebutted” by the staff, facilitators, and numerous athletes”. The 39-year-old quarterback is debating retirement. And what should it be? Manning is not being sued or accused of anything in the latest suit.
“Omaha! Omaha!” Manning was heard hollering in the background. Eventually, the list grew to 33 incidents, but the final one on the initial list, No. 27, was the now-infamous one from February 1996 involving Manning. Had Manning simply understood there is no “Omaha!” call after signing a non-disclosure agreement his life would be easier today, and so would Naughright’s.
Former Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer hit on on Naughright while she was working on his foot.
Manning twice taunted Naughright about the incident at later dates, pulling his trousers down and sitting on another person’s face while she was in sight. The book was published in September 2000.
However, the two-time Super Bowl champion and Papa John’s wingman-Manning may not be the squeaky clean golden boy that he is perceived to be by the national media, as Shaun King of The New York Daily News posted an article on Saturday full of disturbing details from an incident which occurred when Manning attended the University of Tennessee in 1996. How factual it is remains to be seen, but the details offered were shocking and repulsive.
