Kendrick Lamar Pays Tribute to Compton and Africa at the 2016 Grammys
Everyone was wondering if anyone at the Grammys would mention Kanye West’ latest diss of the pop star, who claimed in a new song lyric that he made her famous.
Lamar is up for 11 awards at the Grammys. “And some will be moved”, she said, seeming to speak to those who were critical of her Super Bowl performance of the anthem, “Formation”.
According to the rapper, Kendrick Lamar’s performance ripped off his hip-hop musical “The Last Jimmy”, which showed in Los Angeles last.
Although the Academy Awards are being accused of lacking cultural diversity, the 58th annual Grammy Awards managed to do quite the opposite during Monday night’s three-and-a-half-hour-long show. To say To Pimp a Butterfly was merely the year’s best rap album was like saying Stephen Curry was merely the Western Conference’s best point guard.
Another major moment took place across the country in New York City, where the cast from the hit Broadway musical “Hamilton” performed a segment from their show.
He started as he appeared beaten, in handcuffs, with chains around his hands and a bruise on his eyes.
Lamar concluded his set silhouetted against a display of the continent of Africa, with the word Compton written across. Ronson gave a shout-out to Prince, James Brown and George Clinton for being leaders in funk. In the next 10 years from now, hopefully they’ll be further than where I’m at. Backed by Jack Antonoff on guitar, Swift sounded triumphant as she walked through the audience while glitter rained down inside the Staples Center.
Other major winners included D’Angelo, The Weeknd and Ed Sheeran, with Sheeran winning Song of the Year.
In between the slow medleys were tributes to artists that had passed away, such as Eagles guitarist Glenn Frey, Motorhead frontman Lemmy and Earth, Wind & Fire singer Maurice White.
