Manchester United don’t want that long time in the wilderness of not really winning or being successful and not challenging for titles.

But Wilkins believes Mourinho could try and tempt him to Old Trafford if, as is being widely reported, he replaces Louis van Gaal at the end of the season.

While doubts over the former Chelsea manager’s style of play and antagonistic behaviour persist among members of United’s boardroom, there is a growing sense that the club’s hand has been forced by the appointment at the Etihad Stadium.
