Ted Cruz overtakes Donald Trump in a new national poll
“The overwhelmingly negative feelings of South Carolina Republicans toward the political establishment have helped Trump build upon the support he enjoyed since the summer”, Patrick Murray, director of the Monmouth University Polling Institute, said.
John Kasich took the stage one-by-one Thursday to answer questions from the audience and CNN moderator Anderson Cooper.
Kasich was campaigning in Charleston on Thursday morning. She also liked that the senator was “all about term limits” in D.C. Rubio joined his fellow competitors for a CNN town hall Wednesday night, where he shared a few personal stories about the adversity he faced growing up as a Cuban-American. “Could you believe that young man?”
Meanwhile, Kasich is looking to continue momentum in the race after solidly placing second in the New Hampshire primary behind Trump. Rubio receives 17 percent and Bush 10 percent among those voters.
In the town hall event, Trump was asked by Cooper about the Pope’s comments.
He noted that pollsters predicted Trump would win Iowa, but he defeated him, and ended up with more votes than any candidate in Iowa history. “This guy has been so humble”.
Despite his lead, Trump has unleashed a barrage of attacks against Cruz, calling him “a liar” for weeks and then describing him as “slimy” and “nasty” at a rally in North Augusta, South Carolina on Tuesday. Former President George W. Bush, for instance, recently starred in a pro-Jeb Bush radio ad airing in the state. He has a significant ground operation in the state, he brought in his brother Monday, and Barbara Bush hits the Palmetto State tomorrow.
“It is simply an illustration, I don’t think anyone who looked at that website believes it is a real picture of them shaking hands”, said a Cruz campaign adviser, speaking on background in order to speak more freely. He added, “I think it was probably a little nicer statement than reported by you folks in the media”. “I think somebody at Wall Street Journal doesn’t like me but I never do well with the Wall Street Journal poll”, Trump said in response to the new data.
In that poll, Cruz dropped four points to third place with 18 percent.
The Cruz-funded website, TheRealRubioRecord.com, features the photo on a page about the “Rubio-Obama Trade Pact”, which accuses Rubio of casting the crucial vote to pass the Trade Promotion Authority bill in the Senate to give President Barack Obama authority to negotiate trade deals more quickly. Among registered voters who said they would participate in a GOP primary, he drew 26% support in the new poll, trailing Mr. Cruz, whose support rose by eight points to 28%.
