Hillary Clinton leads Bernie Sanders in recent MI poll
Hillary Clinton has the edge over her Democratic presidential rival, Sanders, when it comes to scoring endorsements from unions. NNU members do grass-roots work for Sanders – something that Priorities, a superPAC without members, can not provide for Clinton. And she disparaged Sanders not only for his criticism of her husband, but also of President Obama.
The primary battle in SC is focused on the African-American vote.
In a newly released ad titled “Brave”, the democratic candidate is comforting a 10-year-old girl, who is scared about her parents’ potential deportation. It’s essentially a parallel election that underscores Clinton’s lopsided support from the Democratic establishment.
Sanders gets support from National Nurses United for Patient Protection, a political committee operated by the union National Nurses United.
Sen. Sanders: “I understand the African American community has been harder hit than any other community in America”. Both had the support of 45 percent of primary voters, but the Wall Street Journal noted that statistic only included results from six polls over the past year.
The disparity is sparking a backlash among some Sanders supporters, who complain that the Democratic nominating process is decidedly undemocratic, rigged in favor of Clinton.
“Back then, it was a state-by-state determination, and I’m happy that most states have moved in the right direction, but what we have to do now is get to comprehensive immigration reform with a path to citizenship”, Clinton said.
But Caesar Vargas, national Latino outreach strategist for Sanders’ campaign, says there are good reasons Sanders voted against that 2007 bill, not least of which was the prospect of large corporations importing guest workers without adequate protections against abuse. Still, that represented a 14-point swing from when the same poll was conducted last month, before Sanders’ double-digit New Hampshire primary win.
Both candidates are working to woo minority voters, a key plank of the Democratic party, ahead of Saturday’s Nevada caucuses.
“As we have seen there are high-level Vermont Democratic politicians who have supported Hillary Clinton, so there’s a base to build on there: Madeleine Kunin, Patrick Leahy, Governor Shumlin all Clinton supporters, former Governor Howard Dean. He’s called him weak, he’s called him disappointing”, Clinton said.
But answering a follow-up question from MSNBC’s Jose Diaz-Balart on if she would commit to introducing immigration legislation in her first 100 days, Clinton said she would.
Pollsters also found that likely Democratic primary voters in SC are typically dedicated to their candidate. “The [Clinton] firewall is nonexistent, and if they think it exists, it’s coming down”, he said.
Conventional wisdom would tell us Sanders is really, really popular in his home state.
