Vettel wins for Ferrari and Bianchi
On the Podium all three drivers saluted to the heavens to there friend Jules Bianchi, a young driver who was destined for greatness and will never be forgotten.
“Mentioning Senna’s record is something incredible”.
“I don’t know if it was a lack of concentration or what. But nevertheless this is for Jules and his family”.
He admitted it was “bizarre” that in the circumstances he had extended his championship lead over Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg.
Russian Daniil Kvyat took second instead for Red Bull – his first F1 podium appearance – with team mate Ricciardo following home in third after banging into both Mercedes on a battling afternoon.
That promoted Max Verstappen to fourth – the 17-year-old’s best result yet in F1 – with Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button earning McLaren-Honda their first double points finish of the season, the pair fifth and ninth respectively.
Hamilton has won five races so far this year, with Rosberg clinching three.
A few moments before the race started, Bianchi’s mother Christine and father Philippe, brother Tom and sister Melanie joined the drivers as they all linked arms on the Hungaroring grid.
A downcast Rosberg sitting next to his triumphant team-mate said: “I don’t have an explanation. I’m gutted about today”. In the process of trying to get into P2, Ricciardo hit Rosberg who was in turn closing in on Vettel.
The two Ferrari drivers darted into the lead after getting a magnificent start off the line, while pole sitter Hamilton slipped back to fourth.
“I was not allowed to compete again after the auto doesn’t arrive by itself into the garage, so when I knew the rules I thought: ‘Why did I push so hard?'” Alonso said with a rueful smile afterwards.
In the drivers’ championship, Hamilton has 202 points, with Rosberg on 181 and Vettel on 160.
Thank-you very, very much to the team for the recovery since Friday and today I just think it came together and despite the safety auto we still managed to win.
But the race was re-started because Brazilian driver Felipe Massa was out of position on the grid.
Rosberg was faring considerably better, taking advantage of Raikkonen’s mechanical troubles to move into second place. Vettel and Raikkonen then also pitted before the safety vehicle came out while debris from Huelkenberg’s auto was cleared.
There was a late worry for Rosberg in final practice as his vehicle ground to a halt coming out of pit lane because the car’s anti-stall failed to engage. The win moves the four-time world champion to within 42 points of Hamilton, but that was not the focus yesterday’s post-race celebrations.
He was. 575 seconds ahead of his Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg and.
But the drama intensified when Nico Huelkenberg in a Force India went off on lap 43 of the 69 laps after losing his front wing, crashing head-on into a tyre safety barrier. However, he found himself damaging his front wing while trying to maintain fifth place, falling all the way down to 14th at one point.
The incident was investigated and Hamilton’s misery was compounded when he was given a drivethrough penalty. The Ferraris had a faster pace, separated by 2 seconds but 9 seconds from the rest of the field which began with Rosberg in P3.
