Palestinian shot and killed after stabbing Israeli officers
Israeli forces have shot dead a Palestinian allegedly over attempting to run over soldiers in the occupied West Bank shortly and another young Palestinian has died of his wounds in clashes with Israeli troops.
A Palestinian stabbed two Israeli police officers before he was shot and killed at a main entrance to Jerusalem’s Old City, police said Friday.
Muhammad Abu Khalaf from the town of Kafr ‘Aqab in northerneastern Jerusalem stabbed two Border Police officers, wounding one moderately and one lightly before he was shot dead Friday morning, police said.
She said one of the officers sustained knife wounds to the head and the other was cut in the hand before shooting the man.
Since October 1, Palestinian knife, gun and car-ramming attacks have taken the lives of 27 Israelis, an American and an Eritrean, according to an AFP count.
Palestinian attackers have carried out numerous assaults at the gateway over the past 5 months, prompting Israel to significantly beef up security there in response.
Both Palestinians were shot and critically injured by an armed civilian present at the scene, al-Samri said.
Speaking in a Thursday briefing to the UN Security Council, Mladenov noted the accelerated rate of Israeli demolitions of Palestinian structures in the West Bank in 2016 – 29 per week, “three times the weekly average for 2015”.
Channel 10 TV reported that the Palestinian attackers, teenagers from the Ramallah area, walked around the supermarket for about 20 minutes scoping out victims before stabbing two shoppers in the back and neck.
“This horrific incident again underscores the need for all sides to reject violence, and urgently take steps to restore calm, reduce tensions, and bring an immediate end to the violence”, the U.S. State Department said.
The Palestinians say the Tel Aviv regime seeks to change the status quo of the holy Muslim site. Israel says the violence is fueled by a Palestinian campaign of lies and incitement, compounded on social media sites that glorify and encourage attacks.
