5-year-old leads blind grandmother to safety from burning home
In the clip, Kenner Fire Department Chief John Hellmers praised the little girl, saying had it not been for her quick response, the fire “could have been tragic”.
Cloe led the way out of the house, with her grandmother holding on to her shoulder and their dog, Coco, trailing behind them.
KENNER, Louisiana- A little girl used a very important lesson she learned in school to help save herself and her blind grandmother when their home caught on fire.
Thanks to a lesson in fire safety Cloe was taught during an October 14 visit with her class to the Kenner Fire Department, she was able to save her and her grandmother’s lives.
If you’ve ever wondered in school, “When am I ever going to use this in real life?” this 5-year-old girl in Kenner, Louisiana, will have an answer for you.
Cloe’s mother, Shone Arceneaux, was taking her other children to a nearby carpool stop at the time of the fire.
Cloe was listening and learning, and that knowledge came in handy Wednesday morning when the stove caught fire, setting off the smoke alarm.
“They let us bring water”, she said, referring to the firefighters who allowed the students to handle a fire hose.
“She saved her grandmothers” life and saved her own life, ‘ he added.
Maybe Cloe learned something else she still might not fully understand, heroism.
A GoFundMe page, which was set up to help the family in the wake of the crisis, says that Cloe’s grandmother wanted to try finding her shoes before exiting the home, but Cloe insisted that they get out immediately. You can make donations here.
