Flint To Get An Additional $2 Million
The money will be shared by Hamilton Community Health Network and Genesee Health System to hire more people and provide additional services. The bill now goes back to the Senate to work out differences in its version of the legislation.
State regulators never required that the river water be treated to make it less corrosive, causing lead from plumbing and pipes to leach into the water supply.
The tab to replace lead water lines at some Flint homes may be higher than what the houses are actually worth.
Flint has missed by two weeks a deadline for showing that its water system has enough competent staffers, Pollins said in a letter to Keith Creagh, director of the state Department of Environmental Quality, and other officials. It’s money that could be put to use within the next 30 days.
An extra $2 million is set aside to help replace the lead pipes in Flint.
The financing will come in the form of grant funding, meant to reimburse the city for the $2 million it paid as part of the state-local agreement to reconnect with the Detroit water system last October. Under Mayor Weaver’s plan, which relies on estimates from the Lansing Board of Water and Light, this funding would cover replacement of lead service lines for several hundred homes.
In collaboration with Rowe Professional Services, a Flint-based engineering firm, the state legislature passed an agreement to update analysis of Flint’s water pipes and aid health and safety efforts on behalf of the city’s residents.
But, despite the costs, officials say fixing the city’s lead lines must remain a priority for Flint’s residents and the city’s financial future.
The EPA says the samples confirm results from earlier testing.
The CRS report says the EPA did not use its emergency powers to protect human health until January – nine months after officials became aware of water contamination in Flint.
The governor plans to earmark $25 million for lead pipe removal in the city.
The lawmakers unanimously OK’d the measure Thursday. Residential customers would still have to pay for water used to flush toilets or do laundry.
Residents of Flint, where more than 40 percent live below the poverty line, were granted some relief from the hefty water bills with a circuit court ruling in August that the city had to cut the rate it charged for water service by a third, finding a 2011 rate hike to have been illegal.
If consumed, lead can cause developmental delays and learning disabilities in children. The 41-year-old used it in the painting this month as a permanent reminder of children affected in Flint. Sadly, there have since been numerous high-profile cases of contamination, such as in Toledo, Ohio, in 2014, where agricultural runoff and crumbling infrastructure led to an algal bloom in Lake Erie that made the city’s drinking water unsafe. He’s faced criticism and protests, but has said he’s focusing on resolving the crisis.
It says for pregnant and breast-feeding women and kids six and under, bottled water is the safest option. Snyder has said about 15,000 more Flint residents would benefit if the government approves the request.
