Obama OKs new sanctions on N. Korea over nukes
US President Barack Obama on Thursday signed off on new sanctions against North Korea to punish the reclusive Asian nation for its provocative recent nuclear test and rocket launch. FBI Director James B. Comey has said he believes the protests over police-involved shootings are causing police to be less aggressive in their policing tactics, contributing to the rise in violent crime – a suggestion the White House disputes.
Included in the sanction program is $50 million to transmit radio broadcasts into the country over five years and to assist humanitarian projects.
On February 7, North Korea successfully launched a long-range rocket, saying that it carried a satellite into space.
Pulley said Thursday she was not interested in being a part of what she called “a photo opportunity and a 90-second sound bite for the president”.
North Korea now has the capability to conduct nuclear tests without displaying any signs of test preparations to prying eyes.
The approved sanctions come amid delicate negotiations between China and the United States over a UN Security Council resolution to impose more economic limitations in the face of persistent aggression from North Korea.
The US deployed an extra Patriot missile battery in South Korea last week, and American diplomats opened talks with the ally about developing more missile-defense systems, in order to eliminate the possibility that a North Korean missile could reach US facilities. Yesterday in testimony before Congress, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper confirmed North Korea’s progress in expanding production of weapons-grade nuclear fuel. China has raised concerns about measures that could devastate North Korea’s economy.
