Ottawa Senators acquire Dion Phaneuf in nine-player trade

Calgary D Jakub Nakladal made his National Hockey League debut but only played two shifts for a total ice time of 1:45…. But for the rebuilding Leafs and the suddenly spry Phaneuf, there may actually be some fire under all the smoke McKenzie just created – especially after on Monday morning. He will earn $4 million in the final year of his current deal, which expires after next season.
Phaneuf, 30, had skated in 423 games with the Maple Leafs through parts of seven seasons, registering 196 points (45 goals and 151 assists) and 598 penalty minutes.
The future: He’s a candidate to be flipped to another club by the February 29 trade deadline.
In Tampa Bay, he is pretty much guaranteed to be a part of a contender for the foreseeable future. A great fit, where he can take a step back, is in a better position to win (not the cup) and not be the scape goat for the entire city.
Alongside dealing one of their top forward prospects, Ottawa allotted Toronto a 2 round pick in the 2017 draft.
However, despite the encouragement of the many pockets of boisterous Toronto supporters in the sellout crowd of 19,289, the Maple Leafs could not complete the comeback even with late pressure.
Lindberg, the 6-foot-3 right winger from Stockholm, played two years in Sweden before excelling in the OHL.

Phaneuf becomes the first Maple Leafs captain dealt since Doug Gilmour was sent to the New Jersey Devils in 1997, a move which also involved Lou Lamoriello. He has one season left on a three-year entry-level contract.
A healthy scratch the past three games, the 22-year-old Finn got back into the lineup only because coach Bob Hartley sat All-Star Johnny Gaudreau and Sean Monahan – the team’s top two scorers – along with veteran Lance Bouma for disciplinary reasons. He was traded to Moncton from Halifax this season, and has a QMJHL record of 26-5-17 during this campaign. For his struggling team to have any hope of returning to the playoffs this season, he had to patch up their 28th-ranked defense.
