Stamkos scores 300th goal, Lightning top Penguins 4-2
Tyler Myers’ goal at 13:45 cut the Lightning lead to 3-1. When it was all said and done, Wheeler received a double-minor, and Stralman was given only a minor penalty. Little skated off and didn’t return.
The Lightning moved two points ahead of Pittsburgh in the jumbled Eastern Conference race thanks in part to Stamkos, who will stick around through the end of the season after general manager Steve Yzerman reiterated the team would not try and move its captain by the February 29 trade deadline.
As well as the Jets played in the middle 10 minutes of the third period on Thursday, they were equally as terrible in the final five minutes of the first. Marchessault was able to bang home the loose puck in front and then Stamkos jumped on another loose puck at 19:39 after Pavelec stopped a shot from the point with his glove and inadvertently dropped the puck right in front of the net.
The hit occurred with three minutes left in the second, but when the Jets returned to their bench to start the third Maurice was still steamed, yelling at the referees.
Steven Stamkos recorded his 300th career goal – becoming just the third player in franchise history to reach the milestone with the team – to help lead Tampa Bay to a 4-2 victory at CONSOL Energy Center on Saturday.
After a lackluster opening 15 minutes of a first period in which they were outshot 13-7, the Lightning scored three late goals by Hedman, Marchessault and Stamkos.
“I was upset because you work with these guys every day”, Maurice told reporters after the game, per The Associated Press.
“You’re not doing me any favours here and I know you’ve got a job to do”, Maurice said. Winnipeg scored on a power play goal, a shorthanded goal and an own goal by Ondrej Palat, who knocked in a loose puck. The flurry continued as Stamkos scored his 23rd goal of the season with 21 seconds left in the period to make it 3-0.
Another goal of note occurred at 3:14 of the second period when defenseman Matt Carle got his first goal of the season. Ben Bishop has allowed 90 goals on 1,146 shots faced and Andrei Vasilevskiy has given up 40 goals on 428 shots. It was the first sweep of the Penguins for the Bolts since the 2006-07 season and the first ever regular season win for the Bolts at CONSOL Energy Center.
Then, with the Lightning on a power play after Trevor Daley and Cedric Paquette went at it, the Penguins finally responded. Both teams had scoring opportunities in the five-minute OT, but neither could end the game there, sending it to shootout. Later in the second, Wilson, who scored his first National Hockey League goal Thursday against Detroit, got his second in as many games with the teams skating 4-on-4. Namestnikov has missed Tampa Bay’s previous two games with an upper-body injury.
