Shamrock, Gracie set for 3rd MMA fight at Bellator 149
The Bellator 149 card was headlined by Ken Shamrock vs. Royce Gracie, which had a lowlight of its own in the form of a low blow from Gracie. The ref didn’t see it though and Gracie was busy chipping away at him with ground and pound leading to the TKO stoppage with 2.22mins of the first round gone.
When the replay hit the big screen, the crowd rained down boos, seeing that prior to the knee to the head, Gracie had landed a knee to Shamrock’s groin.
The bout was waved off at the 2:22 mark of the opening round, giving the 49-year-old Gracie, the tournament victor at UFC 1, 2, and 4, a victory in his first fight since 2007. The fight was eventually ruled a draw after 36 minutes.
Gracie never addressed the knee to the groin after the fight, saying, “I’m a fighter”.
When asked about the dubious conclusion, Gracie answered, “I’m a fighter. I don’t know what else to ay, I got upset, I was wrong to get upset because it wasn’t Royce’s fault”. They still want to prove they are more than just the legends of the past. “But it did not catch his groin”. Shamrock, who trained for the fight in Dallas, stood well out of range for the first few minutes, waiting for the right opportunity to come forward.
When Shamrock advanced to close out the distance, Gracie clinched onto his opponent’s neck and delivered an errant knee that was targeted to the midsection. Slice turned thousands of Youtube clicks into a stint with the UFC and Dada 5000’s exposure grew after the backyard fighting documentary “Dawgfight” was released two years ago.
Officially it’s the 11th knockout loss of Shamrock’s career.
