Klay Thompson tops Warriors teammate Steph Curry to win three-point contest
Curry has been in the Three-Point Contest five times already and is tied with Thompson with the most points (27) ever in the competition.
Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry has become the best three-point shooter in recent years, but on Saturday his teammate Klay Thompson reminded everyone why he is among the best National Basketball Association shooters by winning the 2016 All-Star Three-Point contest in Toronto, Canada. I don’t care what words may have come out of his mouth, but there is no way that this pathological competitor would be fine with one of his legendary achievements being topped.
A heavy underdog, at least according to one betting site. Kobe Bryant also picked Curry when asked.
“It was like déjà vu a year ago”, said Thompson, who lost to Curry in the championship round in 2015.
The Warriors are 48-4 at the All-Star break and are a serious threat to break single-season wins record set by the 1995-96 Bulls.
Said Thompson: “It was just fun because we have friendly trash talk between each other, and it’s all lighthearted out there”.
LaVine finally won after extra dunks were needed, joining Jordan, Jason Richardson and Nate Robinson as the only back-to-back winners of the dunk title.
All-Star Aaron Gordon lost to defending Slam Dunk title holder Zach LaVine in one of the most entertaining contests in the history of the league. Curry hit his final shot of the first round, a two-point money ball, to register 21 points and force a three-way shootout between L.A. Clipper J.J. Redick, Houston’s James Harden and Phoenix rookie Devin Booker. The rookie’s main objective in Toronto was his participation in the 3-Point Contest, where he again, took full advantage.
In the first year that frontcourt players were allowed to compete against the guards in the event that combines dribbling, passing and perimeter shooting, Towns beat Golden State’s Draymond Green and Sacramento’s DeMarcus Cousins in the big men side of the bracket before edging Thomas in the finals. “For us to be together on the same team is a blessing”, Towns said. “I think I honestly can win the Skills Challenge”. Following the six-game trip, the Warriors will play 17 of their final 24 games at Oracle Arena, and being that they haven’t lost a home game in over a calendar year, the first two games of this trip provide a great opportunity to build some momentum heading into the final stretch.
