Donald Trump calls for Apple boycott
“The phone’s owned by the government, OK, it’s not even his phone”, Trump said. What I think you ought to do is boycott Apple until such a time as they give that security number. Trump later clarified on Twitter that he uses both and iPhone and a Samsung smartphone. Apple has received support from many consumer rights groups.
It was not the first attack on the world’s best-known technology company by the real estate mogul and reality TV personality.
“[The court order] does not provide “hackers and criminals” access to iPhones; it does not require Apple to hack [its] own phones; it does not give the government “the power to reach into anyone’s device” without a warrant or court authorisation; and it does not compromise the security of personal information”, the Justice Department motion said.
The court order calls the company to assist the Federal Bureau of Investigation in unlocking an iPhone that belonged to one of the suspects behind the San Bernardino shooting, which left 14 people dead previous year.
The filing increased tension in a showdown between the Obama administration and Silicon Valley over security and privacy.
Soon after, he tweeted, “Boycott all Apple products until such time as Apple gives cellphone info to authorities regarding radical Islamic terrorist couple from Cal”.
Apple’s open letter said, “The United States government has demanded that Apple take an unprecedented step which threatens the security of our customers”.
“Hopefully others will follow suit”.
Apple said, “We are challenging the FBI’s demands with the deepest respect for American democracy and a love of our country. It is time to get tough and be smart!”
Trump is no stranger to calling for boycotts of Fortune 500 companies. In November, he lobbied for a Starbucks Corp boycott because the coffee chain’s red holiday cups lacked Christmas-related decorations. He also previously called for a boycott of Macy’s after the retail giant pulled Trump’s line of clothing from its stores due to Trump’s heated rhetoric over undocumented Mexican immigrants.
