Officers, Suspect Shot in Brooklyn Gunfight
Injured was Police Officer William Reddin who was struck in the hip and his partner Police Officer Andrew Yurkiw, hit in his vest at point-blank range. He was in critical condition.
FBI terrorism investigators have joined NY police looking into possible extremist ties of a man who shot two city police officers early Saturday in Brooklyn, law enforcement officials said. Two police officers were shot in a confrontation with Funes, early Saturday, Feb. 20, 2016, who slammed his auto into a police vehicle.
The two officers were recovering at Kings County Hospital, officials said.
When it was over, cops recovered a.357-caliber handgun from the front seat of Funes’ auto, along with five spent shell casings, the commissioner added.
The suspect, Jamaal Funes, 34, opened fire on the officers in the vehicle he hit with his auto, police sources said.
Jamal Funes, who used to use the name Frederick Funes, is seen in an undated photo provided by the New York State Department of Corrections. The other officer was struck below the vest.
The injured officers were the third and fourth NY policemen shot and wounded while on duty during the past month. As they approached Funes, he pointed a revolver and fled, and they followed and radioed for help.
“The bullet did not penetrate his vest”, Police Commissioner Bill Bratton said.
Officers engaged the man, firing at him and striking him several times. Images released by police from surveillance video show the gunman – wearing an ankle-length, white garment – on a crosswalk taking aim and firing at the patrol auto at close range.
The incident started Saturday after two uniformed housing police officers heard a shot fired near Quincy Street and Malcom X Boulevard. Both work a plain-clothes detail with the 81st Precinct’s anti-crime unit, Bratton added.
The investigation is ongoing, police said.
