Photo of Bernie Sanders’ Chicago Arrest Surfaces
It shows a man with thick glasses being dragged away by two police officers and put into a van.
It was already known that Sanders was arrested during a protest in August 1963. A newspaper clipping has also revealed that a “Bernie Sanders” was taken into custody for resisting arrest.
“As the Tribune reported: “‘Bernie identified it himself, ‘ said Tad Devine, a senior adviser to the campaign, adding that Sanders looked at a digital image of the photo.
If Sanders’ campaign is looking for a new way to prove the candidate’s dedication to the movement for civil rights and racial justice, this video may be just the proof it needs. Around 12% of the black voters over the age of 45 support Sanders while 78% of them support Hillary Clinton.
The rally, held in the Englewood neighborhood of Chicago, ended when police stormed the crowd and arrested activists for exercising their right to free speech. The New York Times reports there’s also video from the same incident that was released Monday by Kartemquin Films, which is making a documentary about the protests.
The photos and video were taken in the South Side of Chicago in 1963 when Sanders was a 21-year-old student at the University of Chicago.
In Saturday’s Nevada caucus vote, which Clinton won by a slim margin according to entrance polls, a large majority of black caucus-goers supported Clinton, while whites and Hispanics were more evenly divided.
Bernie Sanders is meeting with civil rights leaders in Washington, vowing to help black Americans escape poverty, protect voting rights and any nomination President Barack Obama nominates to the Supreme Court. Sanders at the time was a student at the University of Chicago.
