Osi Umenyiora expected to sign one-day contract to retire with Giants
All Umenyiora wants to do is sign with the team for one more day, so he can then retire with the franchise he played with for nine seasons from 2003-2012.
The impact Osi Umenyiora had in a Giants uniform was very undervalued from this journalist view-point and quite frankly his impact on the game should not fall on deaf ears.
That production was a direct influence on each of the New York Giants Super Bowl victories over the New England Patriots, whom might I add where favored to win each game.
Umenyiora hasn’t officially announced his retirement yet, so as training camps get under way and injuries happen, it’s entirely possible he’s lured back to play another year or two, but sooner or later he should finish his career with the Giants.
Umenyiora, 33, joined the Giants as a second-round draft pick out of Troy State in 2003 and played 10 seasons before signing with the Falcons in 2013 as a free agent.
He spent the past two seasons with the Falcons, ending up as a situational pass rusher. Umenyiora had 75 of his 85 career sacks for the Giants, including seasons of 14.5 (2005), 13 (2007) and 11.5 (2010). Fences were mended, though, and Umenyiora is on good terms with the Giants.
There’s only three names ahead of Osi Umenyiora’s on a list of the most prolific pass-rushers in the history of the New York Giants: Michael Strahan, Lawrence Taylor and Leonard Marshall. He was a starter and key member of a defense that won two Super Bowls, and general manager Jerry Reese has said Umenyiora was one of his favorite players.
