Donald Trump heads to Georgia in first visit after SC sweep
– Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Bernie Sanders on the Democrat side Saturday, winning 19 delegates to 15 for Sanders.
Jeb Bush has officially suspended his presidential campaign following a disappointing result in the SC primary.
A string of victories for Clinton and Trump in Super Tuesday contests would give them commanding leads in the delegate race, dampening prospects for their rivals to catch up. “It’s tough, it’s nasty, it’s mean, it’s vicious, it’s attractive”, he said. When you win, it’s handsome…. “(That) is way behind top three”, said former Republican Senator Bob Dole just days before the South Carolina Republican primary.
“I don’t think I’m being treated fairly by the RNC”, Trump said Sunday on “This Week” following his double-digit win in SC over Florida Sen.
Cruz came in third with a razor-sharp finish behind Marco Rubio.
Face the Nation host John Dickerson wondered aloud if Rubio having to wait for other candidates to drop out to see bursts of momentum meant that he was simply everybody’s second choice. Mr Bush and other candidates lagged far behind. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, appears for his South Carolina primary night rally at the South Carolina State Fairgrounds in Columbia, S.C., Saturday, Feb. 20, 2016.
Mr Cruz’s inability to distinguish himself from Mr Rubio in the state was a blow to his campaign, which had invested heavily there to rally support among South Carolina’s large population of evangelical voters.
The 2016 election has shown voters’ anger with the political establishment and the influence of big money.
In the modern political era, a candidate usually wins enough delegates to emerge as the presumptive nominee several weeks – or even months – before the end of primary voting.
In his appearances Sunday morning, Cruz refused to address the issue of why evangelicals, whom he considers his base, have not provided more support.
He is virtually guaranteed to win the next primary in Nevada, where he now enjoys a 30-point lead in the polls.
“The people of Iowa and New Hampshire and SC have spoken, and I really respect their decision, so tonight I am suspending my campaign”, he told backers in the Palmetto State, according to NBC News.
“When you look at it right now, it looks like there’s this juggernaut”, said Rich Beeson, a senior aide to one of Trump’s main rivals, Florida Sen. In truth, his campaign was over before it hit the Palmetto State, so credit to Bush for making his exit as graceful as it could possibly be under the circumstances.
For Clinton, her challenger still remains formidable. “That ought to be a real warning sign as to what state exactly is Marco going to win”.
Bush sought to campaign as an optimistic champion of pragmatic conservative values – but his positions in favor of overhauling immigration laws and educational standards put him out of step with an increasingly conservative Republican electorate that was hungry for an outsider, not the ultimate insider.
